While we last compared dermal piercings to surface piercings, we’d like to take some time to go a little more in-depth into what you should know and look out for when you’re getting a dermal piercing.
Dermal Piercing process
Although dermal piercing can be done with a standard needle, we recommend using a punch tool performed by an experienced professional — it’s safer, cleaner, and causes less trauma. The overall intensity of a dermal piercing depends on three factors: the area being pierced, your personal pain tolerance, and the skill of the artist.
Area being done: Some areas are more sensitive than others. Cartilage (ears, nose) and soft tissue (lips, nipples) usually hurt more due to nerve concentration and tissue density.
Pain Tolerance: The more pain-tolerant you are, the less intense it will feel. Distraction techniques help — candy, conversation, even music can ease the process.
Skill of your artist: Dermal piercings require specialized technique. Always confirm your artist has experience with dermals specifically. You can learn more about choosing the right piercing artist here.
Healing and Aftercare
Dermal piercings typically heal faster than surface piercings and tend to leave less scarring due to their single-point nature. Still, it’s crucial to protect the area for 6–8 weeks. Avoid catching the piercing on clothing, towels, or accessories — this can disrupt healing and lead to rejection or tearing.
Ask your artist for a full aftercare plan before getting pierced. Understanding what’s involved can prevent complications and ensure a smooth healing process. You can also explore our full range of professional piercing aftercare products.
Dermal Jewellery
Dermal jewelry consists of two parts: the anchor and the top. The anchor sits beneath the skin and should be made of high-grade titanium to prevent corrosion and minimize rejection. The top can be customized — choose from gold, silver, titanium, jewels, beads, or other interchangeable tops. As long as it fits your anchor, you can mix and match your look.
