We are very proud to announce that she’s officially finished her apprenticeship and is now taking on real clients.
When I wrote the first post about Karen and her difficulties at home, I wasn’t sure if I was doing the right thing.
On one hand, Karen was apprehensive about me talking about it in public because she was worried it would cause more problems at home. I agreed with her to a certain extent but I told her that she should never hide behind her problems.
On the other hand, while airing it out on Facebook might not solve problems, it would definitely force her to face it head-on. It forced her to commit to her own cause, and it didn’t leave any room for fear or self-doubt. It forced her to be brave.
In the end, we decided together that we wouldn’t disclose any names but we weren’t going to do nothing about it either.
Fast-forward to today and I am certain we made the right decision. I can tell every time a client came in to get a tattoo from her she was getting stronger and more confident. It’s as if these people confirmed her beliefs that she could be a tattoo artist; that it wasn’t just some pipe dream that she was foolishly chasing, but that it was becoming more and more real everyday.
I believe the people that came in to support her pushed her to work even harder and made her even more determined. She was no longer fighting just for herself. I believe she didn’t want to let anyone down so she was fighting to validate all the people that believed in her. Yes, there were moments where she even broke down from the pressure but she got right back up and finished the tattoo properly.
She had so many great moments with all these people and I think she will remember them forever. She got cards that told her never to give up and gifts from people she has never met. Of course, some people came in only because they wanted a free tattoo but still, all of them helped because she got better everyday.
At the end of the day, I believe we are all chasing something. Some of us are looking for money, for happiness, for money to lead to happiness, for love, for whatever. And, some of us who are less fortunate don’t even know what we are chasing. Most of the time, the news and media only give us access to the bad stuff; well, this one is for the good guys.
She is a real tattoo artist. She will be taking real appointments. She will be making some real money. I think she’s happier today than she was months ago. Sometimes, dreams do come true.
